So the only thing I did publicly was release Countryside Backgrounds.

But behind the scenes I've been working on getting Northanger Abbey on Steam! More on that when I have something to link to.

This post goes into the approach I took when creating a queer, diverse visual novel adaptation of Jane Austen's 19th century novel Northanger Abbey, and how players responded. Partly because I think other people might find it interesting or useful, and partly to be able to link back to extra context when I discuss the game I'm currently developing, which is based on Pride and Prejudice.

These novels are set in early 19th century England, which was not a great time to be anything but a rich straight white healthy upper class Englishman. The plots directly explore and critique the gender and class attitudes of the upper classes, but at most obliquely touch on anything to do with ethnicity or disability and don't acknowledge queerness at all. Her characters are all straight, cis, and white, and the main characters all able-bodied and upper class.

Which was understandable for the time! But I'd like to do better, especially since I add same sex romances, so queerness is baked in. At the same time, I don't want to be too ahistorical, or change the text so much it becomes unrecognisable.

Over at VN Game Den

I submitted it for review rather than them seeking me out, but they engaged very thoughtfully with the game, with both their praise and (relatively mild) criticism.

Also, I totally forgot to mention it here, but I joined The Shorter Games With Worse Graphics Bundle over on itchio, which was made to encourage and support healthier work practices within the games industry. There's a day left if you want to get 32 indie games for US$20.

I've been happily surprised by how successful it's been. I think it came out at just the right time, people are frustrated by the toxic workplaces around games like Cyberpunk 2077 and want to do something to push back. And I 100% support this, especially when it makes me money ;)

I've been pondering the idea of a Pride and Prejudice visual novel for ages but this morning felt especially inspired, so here's my current thoughts. Feedback welcome!

That's right, it's time for the first official release of Northanger Abbey! You can now play the entirety of Henry and Eleanor's paths. There's also the option to flip to a matriarchy, AND I've added music!

It's not quite as tested or polished as I was intending it to be, I realised I'd screwed up the permissions for one of the images and so wasn't comfortable leaving the old demo up. More updates will be coming!

A screenshot of Eleanor saying Henry, you are too impertinent. Our game will never sell if you are seen being rude to poor Mr Morland in screenshots.

Continuing adventures in creating a gender-swapped version of Northanger Abbey! Here's my first post about it.

These ones were a bit more challenging, both artistically and philosophically.

On the left is the matriarchy version, on the right the original patriarchy version. From left to right: Eleanor Tilney, Evelyn Stratford (an original character), and Captain Tilney.
All characters are in regency wear matching their gender presentation. Short male and tall female versions of Eleanor, in cute pink and cream with dark skin, and friendly round face, and curly dark hair. Tall female presenting and shorter male presenting Evelyn, in purple with curly red hair and glasses. Tallish female and even taller male Captain Tilney, in red military garb with a sharp brown face and curly dark hair.

The challenge here is that Eleanor and Evelyn are trans, while Captain Tilney is wearing military dress.

The reason I made this blog is that I felt like having a place I could ramble about what I'm up to that allowed for proper comments.

So what have I been up up to? Why, working on some major changes for my dating sim version of Northanger Abbey! Namely:
  • Allowing the ability to switch between patriarchy or matriarchy (which flips all the binary gendered characters)
  • Incorporating Renpy's new accessibility options
  • Adding optional image descriptions

I also added the option for players not to give their character an assigned gender, in which case the game just avoids the topic. I feel kind of bad for not doing that from the start.

The other changes are quite wide ranging, so are taking a while to implement. I'm going through scene by scene, drawing rule 63 versions of the characters as they come up, checking for any missed gendered language, adding image descriptions, and then testing.

The designs are still pretty sketchy while I get everything set up, but here's some original and flipped versions I've designed so far: Mrs Allen, Henry Tilney, and a footman.
Original and genderflipped versions of various Northanger Abbey characters. They are all wearing conventional regency wear and both versions have the same colours. Mrs Allen, who is in fancy green clothes. Henry Tilney, who is in dark pink and using a cane. A footman in livery, the female version is dressed as a maid. In every case the female version is about half a head shorter.

The protagonist already had the option to present as male/female/genderqueer so they haven't changed.
